A Few Blocks Away in Chinatown
Chinatown and Columbus Park continue to fascinate me. I love watching the residents interact with each other, especially when they're playing their games. Here are a couple from a recent visit there.

People and Phones
Did you ever notice that most people are on their phones while walking around the city. I've always noticed this phenomenon, but it's become even more apparent since I've taken up photography. It's almost comical!

Two Men
This is one that I've been on the fence about. I like the composition but am bothered by the blur of the man in the hat. I'll definitely try this location again. Hopefully I'll encounter more cool subjects.

Morning Commute in Tribeca
I've been inspired lately by Henri Cartier-Bresson and the recently discovered Vivian Maier. I'm trying to be more daring with how close I photograph my subjects. It's been a thrill each time I've been out. There are more misses than not! Here are some of the images I've captured lately.

Eye Contact
In my humble opinion, getting your subject to make eye contact with your camera can increase how interesting your shot is. I'm still wading my way through this street photography thing. I have such a desire to capture what's happening on the streets in every day life, yet it can be so scary sometimes. That fear definitely holds me back. In New York City I haven't had a scary situation arise but recently in New Orleans I did. A man noticed that I had been trying to take his photo and he started yelling at me. I kept my cool and pretended I was photographing something next to him. Thank God that worked!
Now that the weather is finally warmer, I'm going to make an effort to try and overcome my fear of photographing strangers. No one wants to see pictures of pigeons, and how many more pictures of building facades and statues can one look at? What is interesting are people and what they do on a daily basis.
These photos were not taken on the same day, but I did manage to get eye contact with my subjects. As I look into the eyes of both of these men, I wonder who they are and what their life is about.

Everday Moments: Framed
This month's photography circle assignment was framing, which is a technique in which you use existing elements in your environment to frame your subject. I was excited for this assignment but also found it quite challenging at times. I now find myself constantly looking for framing opportunities even when I don't have my camera with me!
Please join me around the circle to see what Katherine, my talented photography friend has captured this month with her camera.

Winter Storm Pax
This morning we were hit with winter storm Pax. How ironic is it that Pax means "peace". The weather was definitely the opposite of that. My friend Sarah and I ventured out in the snow (which turned to pelting sleet) to get some shots of Teardrop and Rockefeller Parks. Here is what we encountered. Click on each image to enlarge.

Is It Spring Yet?
I know that we're all sick and tired of the snow, slush and cold, but you have to admit that the recent snow storms did make for some beautiful settings. With that said, I am counting the days until spring!
